San Diego Padres vs Washington Nationals

San Diego Padres vs Washington Nationals Prediction

The San Diego Padres are in the hunt for a National League Wild Card position, and the expectation will be that they qualify for the playoffs. The sportsbook MLB odds for this matchup firmly favor the Padres, and it is hard to argue with those baseball odds.

San Diego has won a playoff series three times in the last five years, and its ability to beat up on weaker teams is one of the reasons it has found success. The Washington Nationals could not have gone into the All-Star break in worse form. They lost 8 of their last 10 games and have struggled on the mound. They allowed four or more runs in 9 of those 10 games, and need to slow down the red-hot Padres if they hope to win this series. Will the MLB odds be correct in predicting a dominant San Diego showing, or can Washington use home-field advantage to propel itself to a post-All-Star break playoff push?

Series Introduction:

  • Teams: San Diego Padres at Washington Nationals
  • Dates: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, July 18th-20th, 2025
  • First Pitch Times: 6:45 PM EST on Friday and Saturday, 1:35 PM EST on Sunday
  • Venue: Nationals Park in Washington, D.C.

Series Preview:

One of these teams is in the middle of the playoff race while the other is already looking ahead to next season. All hope is not lost for the Nationals, but time is running out for them to start stringing together the wins they need to make a playoff push. Although they still have pride to play for as the Padres have had their number in recent seasons. This is expected to be a tight series considering the discrepancy in home/road form for the Padres. They are still favorites to win on the baseball odds, but the Nationals could certainly pull off an upset or two in this series.

Head-to-Head:

The Washington Nationals have been able to find postseason success over the last decade, but they have consistently fallen short against San Diego. The Padres are 23-13 against the Nationals in the last six seasons, including a 6-0 sweep last season. They have also managed to win or tie the season series every year in that span, and have gotten off to a strong 2-1 start this year, too.

Key Stats and Facts:

The Nationals have had little to cheer about this season due to dreadful pitching and inconsistent hitting. CJ Abrams and James Wood are the only two players on the team with a .250 average and 10 or more home runs. Most MLB teams have several players in that category at this stage of the season, including three on the Padres. Washington doesn’t even have home field advantage to rely on, as they have similar 18-28 and 20-30 home vs road records.

San Diego needs to start winning road games if they wants to make the postseason. Their 31-18 home record is strong, but their inability to compete away from home could cost them down the stretch. They will look to improve on their 21-26 road record, and will need Manny Machado to continue his strong form. Machado leads the team in both average (.292) and home runs (17), and has been effective in one of his best seasons with the Padres. What has also set San Diego apart is their pitching. Michael King and Nick Pivetta have sub-3 ERAs and have combined for 13 wins this season. A pair of dominant relievers in Jason Adam and Adrian Morejon have given the Padres the chance they need to pick up a valuable series victory on the road.

Predicted Lineups:

The confirmed lineups will not be released until a few hours before the first pitch, but we have a pretty good idea of what roster they will be rolling out. Additionally, there will be no fatigue issues that will impact the lineups or MLB odds with these two teams coming out of the All-Star break.

Tips and Score Prediction:

The baseball odds expect the Padres to cruise to a series victory, but I am not so sure that will be the case. San Diego has really struggled away from home, and a rested Nationals side will prove to be no easy task. Washington struggles on the mound, but they certainly have the quality needed to defy the MLB odds with an upset victory. The three-game set will ensure a winner, and it is hard to overlook the underdog MLB odds on your sportsbook, given the unique set of circumstances.

Final Thoughts:

The San Diego Padres have much more on the line in this series, but the extra rest for both of these teams will make this closer than expected. Manny Machado is certainly capable of winning a game with one swing of the bat, and he will likely find his moment to shine against the Nationals bullpen. Expect high-scoring contests this weekend with the Nationals stealing at least one game at the expense of the Padres.
