Nets vs Pistons Prediction

In a battle of surprising Eastern Conference teams, the Brooklyn Nets will travel to the Midwest on Saturday night to face the Detroit Pistons.

For its part, Brooklyn is surprising, considering the last few weeks. Since a relatively inactive trade deadline from a perceived seller, the Nets have displayed an impressive level of fight and care, led by a gritty defensive performance.

Expert Prediction: Who Wins?

The NBA is a league that is constantly full of surprises, and there are few better examples of that than this matchup between the Brooklyn Nets and Detroit Pistons.

Few would have predicted, at the outset of the 2024-25 NBA season, that a March contest between the Nets and Pistons would feature one of the league’s best-performing defenses against one of the best two-way teams around. Yet, here we are.

Brooklyn has done a brilliant job of playing with toughness and pride after a trade deadline that was expected to see it offload most competent rotation players. Though the Nets haven’t exactly won in bunches, they have limited six of their last 10 opponents to under 100 points and dragged even the league’s best offense, the Cleveland Cavaliers, into a tough fight.

Detroit, meanwhile, has enjoyed a season-long display of toughness and pride after several bleak years. In the NBA, some think that a legitimately good team’s true mark is ranking in the top 10 in both offensive and defensive ratings. According to that thinking, these Pistons are legit.

Over their last 10 games, the Pistons are fourth in offensive rating and ninth in defensive rating. As Cade Cunningham continues to progress toward genuine stardom, the Pistons are going with him. But the Nets will come to town on Saturday night, giving Cade and Detroit a tough test.

Why the Brooklyn Nets Can Cover

In this recent stretch of games, the Brooklyn Nets have emerged as the 11th-ranked team in the NBA in terms of net rating over the last 10 games. They have had a singular path to competitiveness.

While their offense has continued to be stuck in the mud, ranked 28th in offensive rating and 27th in true shooting percentage over the same stretch, their defense has become a force. The Nets continue to hold onto the best defensive rating in the league over the last 10 games, sustaining a trend that began around the trade deadline.

Since their home win over the Charlotte Hornets at the end of January, the Nets have gone 7-3, with six wins featuring a defensive performance in which their opponent was held below 100 points. Even a loss in that mix, a 110-97 defeat at the hands of the Cleveland Cavaliers, is impressive. The Cavs are far and away the league’s best offense and average nearly 123 points per 100 possessions.

Brooklyn’s defense is again going to be its path to covering in this matchup. With the Detroit Pistons on the second night of a back to back, less than 24 hours after having to deal with Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets, the Nets’ already tough defense becomes even tougher.

Why the Detroit Pistons Can Cover

The Detroit Pistons’ intention has to be to break down the Brooklyn Nets’ defense and prevent the establishment of the structure that has powered the Nets’ competitiveness. Fortunately, the Pistons are equipped to do just that.

Like most young teams, with a competent grab and go initiator in Cade Cunningham, the Pistons have turned themselves into a strong transition team. Their length and defensive activity have helped shape a defense on the fringe of the top 10 on the season. Detroit forces 14.9 turnovers per game as a defense, which sits in the top 10 in the league. It has, too, helped to power its offense.

The Pistons are averaging the second-fastest break points per game, at 18.6, during the season. If they can successfully force Brooklyn into defensive turnovers and quickly get out running in transition, the concerns about the Nets’ tough defense will be lessened.

Detroit should be well equipped to do just that. It forces turnovers at a strong rate, and, for their part, the Nets haven’t exactly been clean in possession. With guards like D’Angelo Russell and Cam Thomas, neither of the players celebrated for their decision making, and the Nets turned the ball over at a high clip.

The Nets’ 15.5 turnovers per game rank as the eighth most in the NBA, and opponents have punished them for it. Brooklyn is just outside the bottom 10 in the entire league in fast break points per game, at 15.7.

By playing at a high pace and forcing the Nets into the open floor, the Pistons can mitigate Brooklyn’s good defense and find a clear path to cover on Saturday night.
