Expert Prediction: Who Wins?

It is rivalry week in the NBA, and while the Cleveland Cavaliers and Houston Rockets aren’t exactly an example of a tense rivalry, they do make up the best game of the weekend. The Cavaliers and Rockets represent the two biggest surprises of the season, with the Cavs on a 70-win pace and the Rockets headed toward a top three seed in the brutally tough Western Conference.

While these two teams have taken fairly different routes, they have arrived at this place of competitiveness in the 2024-25 NBA season after holding top three picks in the 2021 draft. Jalen Green hasn’t yet discovered any form of consistency but remains a high-flying scorer with tantalizing talent in Houston. Evan Mobley, meanwhile, continues to show flashes of outright dominance while establishing himself as an elite defender.

Cleveland accelerated its path with a trade for Donovan Mitchell, giving a self-made core the kind of All-Star scorer it needed to make a jump. With head coach Kenny Atkinson at the helm, they’ve done just that this year. Meanwhile, Houston has maintained a consistent approach, bolstering its youthful core with tenacious veterans such as Dillon Brooks and Fred VanVleet.

Despite the differing paths, the Rockets and Cavaliers have arrived here, at the heart of the 2024-25 NBA season, as ultra-competitive teams set to give one another a very hard test.

Why the Houston Rockets Can Cover

The Houston Rockets, under head coach Ime Udoka, have gotten to where they are—second in the Western Conference and headed toward home-court advantage in a first-round playoff series—on the back of an outstanding defense.

The Rockets are third in defensive rating in the NBA, surviving an offense that remains so limited. And, unsurprisingly, that defense is how they can effectively cover against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday night.

With a deep rotation that includes Fred VanVleet, Dillon Brooks, Amen Thompson, Jabari Smith Jr., Tari Eason, and even Jae’Sean Tate, the Rockets have numerous problematic defenders they can throw at the Cavaliers’ lead ball handlers in Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell.

By doing so, Houston can disrupt the flow of Cleveland’s offense and effectively cut the oxygen off to the rest of the Cavs’ offense, a strategy that has worked brilliantly for Houston this season.

With the defensive rotation, length, and connectivity of the Rockets’ defense, they’ve made teams become isolation heavy offenses against them—whether they intended to or not. The Rockets’ opponents are averaging the fewest assists per made field goal this year, at 0.57. Only the Orlando Magic hold their foes to fewer assists per game, at 22.3, with Houston coming in at 22.5. And, as a result, the Rockets are forcing turnovers at a high rate, currently seventh at 15.3 turnovers per game.

By forcing the Cavaliers to turn their offense into one based on isolation, they will essentially make them play one-handed. Ball movement is the crux of the Cavs’ elite offense, and currently, they’re in the top five in assists per game at 29.1. Should Garland and Mitchell, in particular, be made to break down Houston’s offense by themselves, it’ll open up a wide route to Houston covering.

Why the Cleveland Cavaliers Can Cover

On the flip side, however, should the Cleveland Cavaliers effectively move the ball against the Houston Rockets’ defense, they could simply outgun them. Despite counting on a fringe All-NBA level talent in Donovan Mitchell as its lead man, Cleveland’s offense has found truly elite status in the 2024-25 season.

The Cavaliers are first in offensive rating, first in true shooting percentage, first in effective field goal percentage, and second—trailing only the game’s greatest ever passer, Nikola Jokic, and the Denver Nuggets—in assists per possession. If you’re looking for beautiful basketball, just look toward Lake Erie, because it exists in Cleveland.

As teams have learned repeatedly against the Cavs this year, if you can’t slow down their offense, you aren’t going to keep up. That is absolutely true for the Rockets, who, despite having a pair of highly talented offensive players in Jalen Green and Alperun Sengun, haven’t clicked offensively yet.

Houston’s just 12th in offensive rating, but the efficiency is quite hideous. It is 26th in true shooting percentage and the same rank in effective field goal percentage. When the Rockets have to play half court basketball and break defenses down, they struggle mightily. Provided Cleveland’s offense plays to its standard and doesn’t give Houston easy run outs off turnovers and in transition, it should cover here.
