Who Is Favorite to Win?

The current KSW lightweight champion, Salahdine Parnasse, is a major favorite coming into this bout at KSW 101 against Varela Wilson. Parnasse, at 19-2 in his career and the current champion in both lightweight and featherweight, is a -750 favorite. That’s over an 88% implied probability of victory and retaining his title.

The challenger, Varela Wilson, comes back as a considerable underdog. At 12-5, the Frenchman Varela is a +500 underdog at KSW 101. For as staggering of a favorite as Parnasse is, Wilson’s just as big of an underdog, with an implied probability of just 16.67%.

Parnasse: Recent Performances & Form

Salahdine Parnasse last fought in April of this year, and he retained his lightweight belt with a first-round stoppage victory against challenger Valeriu Mircea. That impressive win helped Parnasse rebound from a December 2023 loss at the hands of Adrian Bartosinski, though quite impressively, that came at welterweight as Parnasse stretched himself across three divisions.

The split in Salah Parnasse’s last two KSW fights means he takes an 11-2 record into Friday night against Wilson Varela. Parnasse’s form points to just how versatile of a fighter he is, with three wins by KO/TKO, three wins by submission, and five by decision. Even a closer look, zooming into his last five wins, illustrates that point. Parnasse’s last five victories have seen two TKOs, two submissions (both by rear naked choke), and one decision.

Parnasse’s fight versatility will be a particular strength against his opponent on Friday, and it is likely a big reason he is such a sizable favorite ahead of his latest title defense.

Varela: Recent Performances & Form

After Wilson Varela’s last scheduled fight, for June of this year, was canceled, he’ll get the chance to fight for the title on Friday night. Varela has already fought once in KSW this year and took a victory over Marian Ziółkowski via a TKO after Varela’s opponent suffered a dislocated shoulder and could not continue the fight.

It will be very interesting to see how Varela does on Friday night and, as a result, how the subsequent chapter in his career works out. Though Varela has just 16 professional fights to his name so far in his career, he has proven to be an incredibly streaky fighter.

Varela enters Friday night on a six-fight win streak spanning multiple competitions. Before that, however, he had lost three straight fights while making a very limited impact. Yet, the eight fights that began his career started with back-to-back wins, then back-to-back losses, before a four-fight win streak properly put him on the radar, with his first KSW fight coming after the fourth of those four straight fight wins in March of 2022.

While Salah Parnasse has proven to be a versatile fighter, capable of beating you in various ways, the same can’t be said for Wilson Varela in his career. He has been a power-focused fighter in his professional career, with three of his four wins in KSW coming via KO/TKO and only one by decision.

If styles make fights, then Varela is in trouble. While Parnasse can play to Varela’s weaknesses and exploit them as needed, Varela hopes his power can land him a win and the KSW lightweight championship.
