A matchup once defined by two perennial European MVP candidates has taken on a new dynamic, with Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Milwaukee Bucks heading into Texas to face the Luka Dončić-less Dallas Mavericks.
The Bucks are healthy once again after they entered the All-Star break without Giannis. The result has been a three-game win streak right out of the break, reigniting their push for a top-three seed in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
Dallas, meanwhile, got its first game against Dončić and the Lakers out of the way midweek and now shifts its sights to a highly competitive Western Conference playoff picture. With Anthony Davis still sidelined, it’s up to Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson to hold the Mavs together amid off-court drama and on-court playoff-like battles.

Expert Prediction: Who Wins?
Although the Bucks and Mavericks only meet twice this season as inter-conference opponents, Saturday’s matchup brings a unique wrinkle.
Just four nights after this showdown in Dallas, the teams will face off again in Milwaukee, creating an unusual mini-series within the regular season. The quick turnaround will add a playoff-like atmosphere to both games as head coaches Doc Rivers and Jason Kidd will have a rare chance to make meaningful tactical adjustments—something not often seen in a long, 82-game NBA season.
In that sense, the first meeting between the two teams will likely be dictated by their stars. With a highly anticipated battle between Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kyrie Irving on tap, there’s plenty to break down as this matchup unfolds.
Why the Milwaukee Bucks Can Cover
There is no single player in the NBA more dominant when attacking the rim than the Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Greek Freak remains the game’s best at getting downhill and finishing with physicality. As we’ve seen time and again in the playoffs, when Giannis decides to attack the basket, there’s virtually no stopping him.
An already difficult task for the Dallas Mavericks suddenly looks even more daunting as they brace for one of the most physically dominant forces the game of basketball has ever seen. The Mavs allow the seventh-most points in the paint per game this season, giving up an average of 50.1 per 48 minutes.
For a team to have already sunk so low in paint protection, despite having a quality big rotation of Daniel Gafford and Derrick Lively for most of the season, is concerning. That’s because, after Lively suffered a fractured ankle and Anthony Davis suffered an oblique injury in his Dallas debut, Gafford joined the two big men on the sidelines with a knee injury.
Effectively without any true rim protectors, the Mavs have two options: play an undersized Dwight Powell—who, when fully healthy, wouldn’t even be in the rotation—or go small and try to survive with a makeshift frontcourt of P.J. Washington and Naji Marshall.
Against a Bucks team with a legitimate triple threat in the frontcourt made up of Giannis, Kyle Kuzma, and Brook Lopez, neither option is ideal. Yet, Dallas has no choice. The injury bug has hit them at the worst possible time, and the result will likely be Giannis and the Bucks feasting in the paint against a defense that currently lacks the personnel to stop them.
Why the Dallas Mavericks Can Cover
While the Bucks’ key to victory will rely on exploiting the Mavericks’ weakness with their best player, the Mavs’ own path to covering—and potentially winning—is not dissimilar.
Since Luka Dončić’s trade to the Los Angeles Lakers, Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson have taken it upon themselves to keep the Mavs afloat and lead their push for a spot in the Western Conference play-in tournament.
In seven games since Dončić was dealt, Irving has averaged just over 27 points per game on 46% shooting from the floor and 38% from three. In five of the seven games, he’s scored 30 or more points, including 35 in a dramatic game against Dončić and the Lakers.
Like the Mavs, who struggle to contain Giannis and defend the interior, Milwaukee lacks competent perimeter defenders—especially when tasked with guarding the crafty, sometimes unguardable duo of Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson.
With the Bucks rolling out a super-sized starting five, opposing guards have found success operating on the perimeter and exposing their defensive shortcomings outside the paint.
This month alone, Milwaukee has given up 28 to the Minnesota Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards, 38 to Steph Curry of the Golden State Warriors, 24 to the Atlanta Hawks’ Trae Young on an off night, 34 to the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and 40 to the Miami Heat’s Tyler Herro.
Edwards and Gilgeous-Alexander, in particular, are elite scorers who present a challenge for any defense. The same goes for Irving and Thompson, who have terrorized even the NBA’s most elite defenders for over a decade.
Since Doncic’s trade, the dynamic guard has shouldered the offensive load, increasing his scoring output. Against the Bucks, Irving will need to do it again, matching Antetokounmpo’s relentless scoring on the other end.
