One night after battling Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks on the road, the Denver Nuggets have to continue their Midwest journey. On the second night of a back-to-back, Jokic’s Nuggets will head to Michigan to face the Detroit Pistons.
The Pistons are one of a host of teams, along with the Bucks, fighting for the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference and home-court advantage in the first round of the postseason. Cade Cunningham and company have enjoyed a surprisingly competitive season, and with Denver dealing with tired legs, Detroit is set up for another chance at an upset.

Expert Prediction: Who Wins?
Though six games separate the Detroit Pistons and Denver Nuggets in the league-wide standings, they are both fighting for the same thing in their respective conferences.
The Pistons are just a game back of the fourth seed Indiana Pacers, and the home-court advantage in the first round that comes with it. After a handful of brutal seasons in the NBA landscape, Detroit’s set to return to the postseason — but to hold home court in a potentially tight four seed vs. five seed matchup would be a tremendous success.
Similarly, the Nuggets find themselves in a four team fight for three spots, with the Memphis Grizzlies, Los Angeles Lakers, and Houston Rockets jostling for playoff seeding that would see them secure home-court advantage themselves.
Though Denver has considerably more experience and talent than the Pistons, the reality remains the same: the path through the playoffs is so much easier when a home-court advantage comes into play.
With neither team comfortable dropping a game, it sets up an exciting matchup on Friday night in Detroit.
Why the Denver Nuggets Can Cover
In a tough schedule spot for the Denver Nuggets, against a team that measures up evenly with them, they need to find an edge where they can. Fortunately, they can find an edge in their experience and defensive activity.
The Nuggets, with Nikola Jokic the league’s best hit ahead passer, absolutely feast off of turnovers and in the open floor. Denver’s 19.5 fast break points per contest leads in the NBA, despite the team not having a traditional grab and go type of ball handler.
That extra avenue to create offense is a big part of why Denver’s the second rated offensive by season-long metrics, and first over its last 10 games.
It is also why the Nuggets should find a little extra offense on the second night of a back to back in Detroit. Though the Pistons have ascended brilliantly in the 2024-25 season, and have an All-Star running the show for them in Cade Cunningham, there’s still plenty of evidence of youth in the way they play.
Detroit allows just under 16.0 fast break points per game, a mark that is around league average, but that’s a testament to its dedication to getting back on defense. The Pistons allow a ton of fast break opportunities, with their 15.5 turnovers per game on the fringes of the bottom five in the entire NBA.
With the tired Nuggets coming in on the second half of a road back to back, it’s a glorious opportunity for the Pistons to have a statement win. Denver, however, has made a habit out of manufacturing offense. If it can do so again, through the Pistons’ turnovers and inexperience, it will have a clear path to a road win.
Why the Detroit Pistons Can Cover
In an 82-game season, sometimes a matchup is simplified and can be boiled down to something that exists almost purely in the context in which it is taking place. There is a strong argument that’s the case on Friday night, when the Detroit Pistons host the Denver Nuggets.
In a league where the term “schedule loss” has become commonplace, this is about as tough of a spot as possible for the Nuggets. Ahead of a four-game road trip, the Nuggets first dropped a tough national TV game against the Los Angeles Lakers.
Now, in the midst of this four-game road trip, they have a quick turnaround between a physically taxing matchup against Giannis and the Milwaukee Bucks and tonight’s meeting with the Detroit Pistons. Worse still, the Nuggets are then back on the road, travelling all the way to the East Coast for a Sunday matinee against the Boston Celtics.
That is a brutal stretch Denver finds itself in, and tonight’s meeting with the Pistons is nowhere close to a reprieve. Instead, they are going to see a Pistons team that rode a six-game win streak on either side of the All-Star break, and is one of the hottest teams in the league.
Detroit is 8-2 over its last 10, with hugely encouraging underlying metrics. During this 10-game stretch, it is fourth in offensive rating, eighth in defensive rating, and shooting the sixth-best rate by true shooting percentage.
If the logic is that a team top 10 in both offensive and defensive rating is a genuinely good team, then this Pistons team that ranks fifth in net rating over their last 10 games is a very good team.
