A pair of Eastern Conference opponents who are vying for playoff seeding and potentially setting up a meeting in the play-in tournament will collide on Friday night in South Beach. The Indiana Pacers will face the Miami Heat on the road.
Though the Pacers are in the thick of the Eastern Conference and currently avoiding the Eastern Conference play-in tournament, they do find themselves in the thick of a group of teams between the fifth and seventh seed.
The Heat are trying to join that group. They remain a couple of games behind a crowded middle class in the Eastern Conference. With the perpetually toxic Jimmy Butler out of the picture, however, Miami can focus solely on playoff seeding until the end of the regular season.

Expert Prediction: Who Wins?
Life without Jimmy Butler was supposed to be simplified for the Miami Heat after the mercurial former star took the team hostage with his theatrics throughout the early stages of the season. However, his early returns after his trade to the Golden State Warriors have been far from simple.
Since the trade deadline – with the benefit of the All-Star break to provide a reset – the Heat are 1-6, with their lone victory coming in overtime against the lowly Toronto Raptors. However, a potential reprieve is ahead with this matchup with the Indiana Pacers in the early part of a 10-game stretch that will see them play nine home games.
While Miami hopes an extended home stand in comfortably South Beach will allow it to regroup, the Pacers are coming to town to play spoiler and recapture their own momentum.
After Indiana enjoyed a stretch in January and February, which saw it win 12 of 14 games, it has dealt with maddening inconsistency. The Pacers are 4-4 in the eight games since, including an ugly loss to the tanking Portland Trail Blazers and an overtime win over the Washington Wizards.
With two Eastern Conference teams on a potential collision course and fighting to find a semblance of consistency, Friday’s matchup leaves plenty of intrigue.
Why the Indiana Pacers Can Cover

While the Indiana Pacers are struggling to find consistency at this stage of the 2024-25 regular season, Miami’s completely broken offense is a saving grace ahead of Friday.
The Heat rank 22nd in offensive rating across the league during the season, but, narrowed down to the last 10 games, it is a dreadful 29th. The offense that they have managed to create has been a grind and entirely inefficient, with the team’s true shooting percentage sitting 27th league-wide over their last 10 games.
The reality the Heat are experiencing now gives the Pacers room for error as they try to regain momentum.
Despite Indiana’s recent struggles, its strong offensive foundation shines through. Even in the last 10 games, it ranks 13th in offensive rating—a stark contrast to the Heat’s dismal position. Even more encouraging is that the character of the Pacers’ offense has remained consistent, with the team’s true shooting percentage placing eighth in the NBA over the past 10 games.
The Pacers’ ability to count on efficient offense, even when it isn’t prolific, gives them a very strong baseline. Against a team that is struggling as much as the Heat, a strong baseline can be enough to cover.
Why the Miami Heat Can Cover

With an offense ranked 22nd in a season-long metric and 29th over their last 10 games, the Miami Heat’s perceived edges on offense are few and far between. In this matchup with the Indiana Pacers, however, there are two ways that can work in unison for the Heat to swing the game in their favor.
The first part is a simple math problem rooted in Miami’s commitment to three-point shooting. The Heat haven’t been a good three-point shooting team this year, ranking 17th, making 35.6% of their shots from distance. Yet, they have remained boldly committed to three-point shooting.
Miami is eighth in the league in percentage of shots taken from deep, with 44.4% of its total shots coming from beyond the arc. With the Pacers a far cry from that mark, there’s a chance to skew the numbers in the Heat’s favor. Indiana takes the sixth fewest shots from three point range in the NBA, at just 39%, though it does make them at a better rate than Miami (at 36.7%).
A night of positive variance for the Heat’s shooting would see their offense surge toward a place of competitiveness.
Then, Miami must capitalize on the second part of the evening equation. The Heat have always done a brilliant job dictating the speed of the game, and that hasn’t changed in 2024-25. The Heat are 28th in pace in the league, consistently grinding games down. That’s a far cry from how the Pacers, seventh in pace, like to play.
Miami comes into this matchup steeped in struggles, but a positive shooting night – which remains possible with its rate of threes – paired with limiting the Pacers’ possessions opens up a path for the Heat to cover.
