NBA Player Most Playoff Losses

NBA Players With Most Playoff Losses

You have to be in it to win it, but more often than not, a spot in the dance isn’t enough to avoid heartbreak. Even Michael Jordan, a six-time champion who owned the league throughout the 1990s, took more than his fair share of lumps during the 1980s before he broke through.

Like Jordan, some of the league’s greats have been handed a ton of playoff losses throughout the years. Which players have suffered the agony of defeat most? Keep reading for Sportzino’s ranking of NBA players with the most playoff losses.

10. Kobe Bryant

With 85 losses over 220 career playoff games across 20 seasons, checking in at number 10 is the legendary Kobe Bryant.

Though Bryant enjoyed lots of individual and team success during his illustrious NBA career, there was plenty of heartache, too.

Bryant’s lone MVP season, in 2007-08, in which he also finished in the top five in Defensive Player of the Year voting, saw Bryant and the Lakers lose the NBA Finals in six games. A string of three straight titles for the Lakers was snapped in 2003-04, with L.A. falling in five games to the Detroit Pistons in the NBA Finals.

Yet, despite these losses and Bryant’s spot 10th in all-time playoff losses, there was a ton of success, too. Bryant finished his career as a five-time champion, a two-time NBA Finals MVP, and one of the most heralded players in league history.

9. Shaquille O’Neal

Fittingly, right alongside Kobe is Shaquille O’Neal, who won three straight titles alongside the high-flying guard. With 87 losses over 216 career playoff games across 19 seasons, Shaq just edges Kobe.

Like Kobe, a wildly successful career didn’t insulate Shaq from losses. The game-altering big man was swept in the NBA Finals in 1995 against the Houston Rockets. The following season, Shaq’s Orlando Magic were swept in the Eastern Conference Finals by Jordan’s Bulls. And, of course, he was a part of the Lakers team that fell in five games to the Pistons in the ‘04 NBA Finals.

However, Shaq ended his 19-year career with four titles, three Finals MVPs, and a legacy that will last forever.

8. Al Horford

Though not quite in the same all-time standing as Shaq and Kobe, Easy Al Horford checks in next with 88 losses in the playoffs (so far) across 188 games in 18 years. While the 2023-24 season ended with Horford winning his first title as a member of the Boston Celtics, there was plenty of heartbreak along the way.

As both a member of the Celtics and the Atlanta Hawks, Horford was part of dominant regular season teams that couldn’t quite get over the hump. Most painful of all was a six-game loss in the 2022 NBA Finals at the hands of the Golden State Warriors.

However, last year’s title puts Horford’s losses in a new light, as the five-time All-Star is now also a champion.

7. Robert Horry

Big Shot Bob, Robert Horry, took 89 losses in the playoffs across 244 games in 16 years. As a part of two consistently successful franchises in the Lakers and San Antonio Spurs, it’s no surprise to see him having racked up losses.

Though Horry never lost in the NBA Finals, his place on teams that consistently went the distance gave him plenty of time to vault up these rankings.

Yet Horry ended his 16-year career as a seven-time NBA champion and a fondly remembered role player. He has rings spanning both hands despite averaging just seven points a game.

6. Tony Parker

Tony Parker was a much more prominent member of those Spurs teams, suffering 89 losses across 226 playoff games in 18 years.

Like Horry, Parker’s place on such a consistently great San Antonio team enabled him to experience deep playoff runs and take plenty of losses along the way. Unlike Horry, however, Parker also experienced an NBA Finals loss — at the hands of the Miami Heat in 2013.

But Parker, a four-time champion and one-time Finals MVP, had more highs than lows.

5. John Stockton

Finals losses are a bit more synonymous with the Utah Jazz’s John Stockton, who lost 93 times in 182 games across 19 seasons. The most notable of those losses came in June 1997 and June 1998, when the Jazz lost consecutive finals to Jordan and the Bulls.

Yet Stockton enjoyed an illustrious career, earning 10 All-Star nods, 11 All-NBA selections, and being named all-defense five times.

4. Tim Duncan

One of the best players in NBA history, Tim Duncan, was not immune to playoff losses, with 94 suffered in 251 games across 19 years.

As a member of the Spurs, Duncan lost in the NBA Finals in 2013, while racking up losses in deep playoff runs throughout his career.

However, Duncan retired as one of the game’s all-time greats, with five titles, three Finals MVPs, and two regular-season MVPs.

3. Karl Malone

Like his running mate John Stockton, Karl Malone’s 95 losses in 193 playoff games are most notable for the pair of finals losses at the hands of the Chicago Bulls.

While Malone unsuccessfully chased a ring with the L.A. Lakers at the end of his career, he still retired with a Hall of Fame profile, with two MVPs, 14 All-Star nods, and 14 All-NBA selections.

2. Derek Fisher

A key piece in Shaq and Kobe’s Lakers teams, Derek Fisher’s lengthy career sees him place second all-time with 98 playoff losses across 259 games in 18 years.

A five-time champion, Fisher also suffered three losses in the NBA Finals, falling short against the Detroit Pistons in 2004, the Boston Celtics in 2008, and the Miami Heat in 2012.

1. Lebron James

If you have to be in it to win it, there’s no better example than Lebron James, who made seven straight NBA Finals at one point in his fantastic career.

James has 105 playoff losses in 289 games over 22 years, though L.A. is likely to see both those numbers grow in the coming days and weeks.

During his second Cleveland stint, Lebron, a four-time champ, four-time MVP, and four-time Finals MVP, has also lost in six different finals series, from 2007 with the Cavs to 2018.
