NBA Preseason Odds Analysis
New Zealand Breakers at Utah Jazz
- Spread: Breakers +28.5, Jazz -28.5
- Moneyline: Breakers +1500
- Over/Under: 207.5 Points
The Utah Jazz are not expected to have a good season this year, but they are still heavy favorites on the NBA preseason lines against the New Zealand Breakers. The Jazz may be a lower-tier NBA franchise, but they are far superior to any non-NBA team. Like most NBA games preseason between an NBA team and a non-NBA team, it doesn’t really matter who the matchup is between. Even the worst NBA team will be a favorite over the best non-NBA team.
The Utah Jazz dealt with a ton of injuries last season, and there is actually a small level of optimism surrounding this rebuilding franchise. Lauri Markkanen has shown he has the potential to be one of the best in the league and will be desperate to hit the ground running in the regular season. A game against the New Zealand Breakers will allow Markkanen and his teammates to work off any of the rust collected from the offseason.
This is a hefty spread, but the Utah Jazz will be able to get the cover this evening. The Breakers are among the best teams in the New Zealand Basketball League, but they still lost to the lowly Portland Trail Blazers by 40 points last preseason. The Jazz are far from a good NBA team, but they will look like the 2017 Golden State Warriors against the Breakers.
Pick: Utah Jazz -28.5 (-115)
Minnesota Timberwolves at LA Lakers
- Spread: Timberwolves -2.5, Lakers +2.5
- Moneyline: Timberwolves -135, Lakers +105
- Over/Under: 217.5 Points
There isn’t a much more exciting preseason encounter than when LeBron James and Bronny James’s Lakers take on the Minnesota Timberwolves. LeBron and Bronny will become the first father-son duo to play in the NBA and will feature together tonight in the preseason. The Lakers are slight underdogs on the 2024-25 NBA preseason odds, but the 2.5 point spread implies this will be a close game.
The Lakers will always be one of the premier teams in the league, but they have taken that a step further with LeBron and Bronny. Even with their injury issues, LeBron and Anthony Davis are both expected to suit up tonight for the Lakers. LeBron and Davis scored 25.7 and 24.7 PPG last year, respectively, and will look to lead the Lakers to another deep playoff run. A tough test against the defensively sound Timberwolves is the perfect test for the Lakers to kick off their campaign.
The Timberwolves are also looking to ascend up the NBA power rankings, as they made headlines with their trade last week. They sent Karl-Anthony Towns to the Knicks in exchange for Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo, among other pieces. Towns played all nine seasons of his career with Minnesota after being drafted by the Timberwolves. His lack of defensive effort was unlike his teammates, and the front office decided it was time for a switch. Randle will bring size and volume to the Timberwolves offense, and there aren’t many shooters as lethal as DiVincenzo in the league.
All eyes will be on LeBron James and his son tonight, but the Timberwolves will do most of the scoring. Anthony Edwards has proven he can lead Minnesota to greatness, and the Timberwolves defense will be too much for the Lakers to overcome. The spread is small, making the Timberwolves the perfect prediction to make.
Pick: Minnesota Timberwolves -2.5 (-110)
Golden State Warriors at LA Clippers
- Spread: Warriors -3.5, Clippers +3.5
- Moneyline: Warriors -160, Clippers +125
- Over/Under: 221.5 Points
The Golden State Warriors are moderate favorites on the NBA preseason lines, but the wrong team is favored in this matchup. The LA Clippers lost Paul George in the offseason, but they still have a very competitive lineup capable of getting the victory at home. Kawhi Leonard is unlikely to have much impact, but James Harden is the perfect player to explode in the preseason. His defensive liabilities will not be exposed, and he can heat up instantly from behind the arc. Whether Harden scores or sets up his teammates, he can tilt the scales in his team’s favor offensively.
Steph Curry will always give the Warriors a chance to win. Tonight’s match between Curry and Harden will have a real vintage feel, and Golden State will struggle to match the Clippers’ intensity in the preseason opener. The Warriors made some pretty significant roster changes in the offseason, moving on from Klay Thompson in the backcourt. Thompson comprised one half of the famous ‘Splash Brothers,’ leaving Curry to rain down the threes by himself.
The Warriors are expected to have a better regular season than the Clippers, but that won’t translate to strong preseason play. Harden will erupt for 20+ points en route to an upset Los Angeles victory. The +3.5 point spread is a decent option to consider, but the +125 moneyline is by far the better pick using the NBA preseason odds.
Pick: Los Angeles Clippers Moneyline +125
