The past and the future of NBA superstardom will collide on Saturday night in Hollywood as Victor Wembanyama’s San Antonio Spurs head west to take on LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers.
With just a handful of games separating these two old Western Conference rivals, a head-to-head meeting represents a massive clash. With Wemby and the Spurs surging, the play-in now appears to be the minimum in a brutal Western Conference race.
For the Lakers, another lever after the trade of D’Angelo Russell appears to be likely, but keeping pace with the rest of the West’s top 10 is crucial.

Expert Prediction: Who Wins?
As these two old Western Conference rivals come together over the weekend, a pair of curious factors are at play. The first is that they have been so closely matched throughout the season, with 2.12 points separating them in net rating. The second is that this matchup comes two nights before a second meeting to wrap up a back-to-back.
Coincidentally, however, there are also two key factors that separate the two teams. The first is that, of the four units involved (both teams’ offense and defense), one is capable of reaching an elite level, and that’s the Spurs’ defense. The second is that, while they’ve reached similar levels this season, the Spurs have done it by maxing out every night and achieving their highest level to push for a playoff spot. Conversely, the Lakers remain a team stuck in underachievement and held hostage by the waning interest and effort of stars Lebron James and Anthony Davis.
Why the San Antonio Spurs Can Win
Unsurprisingly, since they’re anchored by the Defensive Player of the Year favorite in Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs’ defense can suffocate teams. For his part, Wemby is averaging 4.0 blocks per game this season—a ridiculous mark in its own right—but he’s topped that average eight times this year as well. With Jeremy Sochan and Stephon Castle playing big parts in the rotation, Wemby has a pair of solid defenders to aid his efforts.
All told, the Spurs are just outside the top 10 in adjusted defensive rating. That in itself is encouraging, considering how young the team is—not to mention the continued absence of head coach Gregg Popovich. Even more encouraging are the glimpses of the defensive ceiling we’ve seen: 11 times this season, the Spurs have held opponents to 105 points or fewer.
The Spurs’ Defensive Strength
For this matchup, San Antonio’s defensive strengths match up well with the Lakers’ offense. While head coach JJ Redick has done what he can to modernize the team’s attack—they’re up to 11th in true shooting percentage and adjusted offensive rating—their most threatening offensive players are still very much paint bound.
At home this season, Los Angeles is averaging 51.1 paint points per game, a mark that is the seventh highest in the league. Whether it’s Anthony Davis in the low post or James getting downhill, the paint is where L.A.’s offense comes from when it’s good. Unfortunately for L.A., that’s also where Wembanyama patrols on defense.
The league’s best rim protector and deterrent from inside 18 feet alters so much of what an offense attempts. San Antonio’s allowing the 11th fewest paint points per game this year, at 47.2, and that league-wide rank would plummet lower if isolated for Wemby’s minutes.
The Lakers don’t possess the kind of stretch big needed to pull Wembanyama out of the paint, and as a result, would need to find the kind of ball movement that they’re yet to find to get the Spurs’ defense in rotation. Creating good looks against a Wembanyama-anchored defense requires relentless effort and ball movement, which are things that have waned for the Lakers while led by Davis and James.
The Extra Effort From the Spurs
This brings us to the crucial second differentiator: the Spurs are determined to compete and perform at their highest level every night, understanding that this is essential to remain in the playoff race. The Lakers, meanwhile, continue to fade in and out of competitiveness, as they have throughout the latter stages of the Lebron and AD pairing in Los Angeles.
Last week, despite making a bold move by trading D’Angelo Russell for Dorian Finney-Smith, who provided much-needed shooting and defensive support on the wing, the Lakers lost two games against the Houston Rockets and the Dallas Mavericks. To lose by 21 points to the Mavs without Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic is completely inexcusable and points to a lack of intent on the Lakers’ side.
Though these two teams are evenly matched on paper, they have a stark difference. Every game, we know which version of the San Antonio Spurs will show up. That team will be competitive, serious, and play good defense. The Los Angeles Lakers, meanwhile, remain a dice roll on a night-to-night basis. With that reality in L.A., I’m happy to back the all-effort Spurs on Saturday night.
