Familiar faces will collide in the Bay Area on Monday night, as the Golden State Warriors and Jimmy Butler play host to the Miami Heat and Andrew Wiggins.
Despite both teams’ place among those looking to contend in the present, however, neither the Warriors nor the Heat has gotten off to a great start this season, a trend reflected in the early NBA odds.
In the Golden State, a war against aging continues. While Steph Curry remains a singular maestro of the sport and a bona fide All-NBA contributor, the team around him continues to let him down—as has been the case since their last title. With the Dubs constantly in trade rumors, help may be on the way.
It’s a similar case for the visiting Heat, who have remained around the Eastern Conference’s play-in tournament spots, despite the brutally weak makeup of the conference. One of the first, and most frequent, teams connected with Ja Morant, a major shakeup could be headed for South Beach. But first, a trip to California.

Expert Prediction: Who Wins?
Why the Golden State Warriors Can Cover

In the twilight of a once-proud dynasty, the Golden State Warriors’ backs are against the wall, and things have gotten desperate.
The urgency to take advantage of Steph Curry’s sustained brilliance has never been higher, with the Dubs a constant in trade rumors. For the time being, however, they must make do with what they have as they try to be competitive in a ruthless Western Conference.
So far, in the 2025/26 NBA season, in terms of offense, that has meant rolling back the clock to the heyday of their greatness. No team in the NBA is getting up more shots from three-point range this season than the Warriors, with an average of 44.2 attempts per game—with the same gap between themselves and the second-place Boston Celtics as there is between the C’s and the sixth-place Brooklyn Nets.
Similarly, no team is taking a greater percentage of their total shots from deep than the Dubs, with 49.9% of their total attempts coming from deep.
Against Miami, the Dubs will be able to get their shot diet up as usual, with the visitors allowing the third most shots from deep per game this season at an average of 40.3.
Though the Warriors’ accuracy from deep is a far cry from their best days (they’re just 12th in the league in team three-point percentage, at 36.0%), and that’s weighing down an offense that ranks outside the top 10 in team efficiency. That said, it enables them to compete on a nightly basis. It just takes a hot shooting night to swing the math in their favor, and that’s shown up repeatedly this season.
Bottomline for the Warriors
Against a Heat team that allows opponents to get shots off from distance, the Warriors will find it easy to continue their ridiculous pace of three-point attempts. Led by the greatest shooter of all time in Curry, even an average shooting night out of the Dubs will allow them to cover.

Why the Miami Heat Can Cover

Despite the Miami Heat’s underwhelming play so far this season, they have maintained a core characteristic of their team over recent seasons. Led by a tremendous front-court duo of Bam Adebayo and Kel’el Ware, the Heat’s team defense has been stout all year long.
Miami is third in defensive rating adjusted for opponent, conceding an average of 112.13 points per 100 possessions—behind just the Detroit Pistons and Oklahoma City Thunder. While that mark—as an opponent-adjusted defensive metric—is helped by the Eastern Conference-heavy schedule the Heat played during the opening half of the season, it does represent a genuine strength of their team.
Under head coach Eric Spoelstra, the Heat have their front court—typically Adebayo and Ware—heavily involved in rotations and defensive actions. That means getting them up to the level of the ball handler, and often, switching onto them.
The elite athleticism of both Adebayo and Ware enables them to do so successfully, but it also cedes the paint to cutters and quick-twitch initiators capable of penetrating the defense. On the season, the Heat’s weakness has been in the paint, as they are in the bottom 10 in paint points allowed per game, giving up an average of 52.6 points per game inside.
With defense always Miami’s best route to competitiveness on a nightly basis, not being exploited inside is paramount. Fortunately for Miami, in that regard, it finds itself in a quality matchup on Monday against the Warriors.
With aging legs in Steph Curry and Jimmy Butler doing so much of the initiating, the Dubs have been unable to regularly penetrate defenses this season. No team averages fewer points in the paint per game than the Warriors, who are scoring just 42.7 points per game inside.
Bottomline for the Heat
In any matchup, Miami’s best route to covering and even winning outright is maintaining its defensive standard. Against a Warriors team unequipped to exploit its weakness, Miami can keep things close in the Bay.
