It does, however, have one thing going for it to create excitement—and possibly even optimism—heading into a preseason finale: With the Saints’ quarterback job still undecided, we’ll see a pair of passers battling for New Orleans on Saturday night.
Why the Denver Broncos Can Cover
Even though the Broncos are an excellent team headed into the final week of the preseason (which means key starters are safely in bubble wrap), they have a couple of things going for them here.
The first is a pair of NFL-quality quarterbacks to throw out with Bo Nix sitting. Jarrett Stidham, the team’s backup, is a player Sean Payton genuinely loves, having given him guaranteed money on the free agent market years ago. Stidham played brilliantly in the preseason, going 30 for 38 with 376 yards passing, four touchdowns, and no picks.
Behind him, former Texas Longhorn Sam Ehllinger has played well, too. As the team’s third-string passer, Ehllinger has put together a case to land elsewhere as a backup after going 20 for 36 with 217 yards passing, one touchdown, and no interceptions.
The quality play of Stidham and Ehllinger has extended Denver’s second reason for optimism here. It has a deep cast of young playmakers at tailback and receiver, and it’s going to use the full preseason run to showcase those players.
The Broncos have enjoyed a lively offense throughout August, and with positions still to be won on the final 53-man roster, it sets up a third and final competitive performance on Saturday.

Why the New Orleans Saints Can Cover
While there isn’t much to be excited about in New Orleans, for even just a day on Saturday, Saints fans may see their team go toe to toe with their old head coach’s squad.
That’s because, while the Broncos can count on two backups battling it out under center, New Orleans is still showcasing its two young quarterbacks to see who will get the Week 1 nod next month.
Second-year quarterback Spencer Rattler stole the show last weekend in a galvanizing performance.
Across two games, the spot-starter last year has gone 25 of 35 with 252 yards passing, one touchdown, and one pick. Rookie Tyler Shough, meanwhile, has flashed impressive arm talent at times while accumulating a line of 24 for 34, 231 yards, with a touchdown and an interception, too.
The mirroring stat line and performances from Shough and Rattler mean first-year head coach Kellen Moore still has a decision to make on a starter. Both Shough and Rattler will be playing for a starting gig on Saturday, and given both players’ pedigree and ability, it could be their only chance at winning a starting job in the NFL.
That is going to breed a level of intensity in their play that’s rarely seen in the final week of the preseason.
Whether it’s enough to make up the large talent gap between the Saints and Broncos remains to be seen. It does, however, open up an obvious route to covering for the Saints against their old head coach.
