Best NFL Week 1 Matchups

Baltimore Ravens at Kansas City Chiefs

Thursday, September 5th, 8:20 PM EST

  • Moneyline: Ravens +125, Chiefs -160
  • Spread: Kansas City Chiefs (-3)
  • Total: 46.5 Points

The Chiefs and Ravens are set to kick off the NFL season, and the opening game could be the best matchup of the week. The Chiefs and Ravens squared off in the AFC championship last season, with the Chiefs edging out a 17-10 victory en route to their eventual Super Bowl victory.

Kansas City is looking to become the first team in history to win three straight Super Bowls, so a week 1 victory would go a long way in securing the top spot in the AFC. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is looking as crisp as ever, and tight end Travis Kelce will look to add another ring in the twilight of his career. The remaining Chiefs pass-catchers are questionable, as they are largely unproven in the NFL. Rashee Rice continues to deal with off-field issues, leaving former Raven receiver Hollywood Brown and first round draft pick Xavier Worthy to pick up the slack.

For the Ravens, they will need to lean on a strong defense and possess the football for as long as possible to pick up the road upset win. The longer the ball is out of the hands of Mahomes, the better it will be for the Ravens. Baltimore has been a top 5 defense in the NFL for the last 5 seasons, as they don’t give up an inch in the run game. Their ability to clog up the middle of the field forces their opponents into 3rd-and-long situations. If quarterback Lamar Jackson can effectively combine with his shiny new running back Derrick Henry, the Ravens can smother the Chiefs, and pull off the upset win on the NFL game odds week 1 2024.

Pick: Baltimore Ravens moneyline +125

Rams at Lions

Sunday, September 8th, 8:20 PM EST

  • Moneyline: Rams +140, Lions -180
  • Spread: Detroit Lions (-3.5)
  • Total: 51 Points

The league has treated its fans to a tantalizing Sunday Night Football matchup, as the Rams and Lions are poised to deliver some action.

Detroit is coming off its best season in decades, as their grit in the lines and ability to make game-changing plays has allowed them to transform into legitimate NFC contenders. Detroit didn’t make many offseason moves, but they didn’t need to. A majority of their core is still under contract, and the management is confident they can take the next step. Detroit will have their edge on defense, and if quarterback Jared Goff can find his early-season form from last year, the Mo-town crowd will be going home happy.

The Rams are in an interesting position, as the arrival of Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua has shot them out of their short rebuild. The 2022 Super Bowl champions have a good combination of veteran talents such as quarterback Matthew Stafford, and up-and-coming youngsters. Their offense is expected to tear apart the Lions’ defense, but a 51 point total is a little high for a season-opening game. Both of these offenses can score, but fresh defensive units will have a little extra pep in their step on Sunday night, leading to an entertaining, but  lower scoring than expected matchup.

Pick: Under 51 Points
