NFL Week 1 Preseason Predictions
Atlanta Falcons (-158, -2.5 Point Spread) vs Miami Dolphins (+112, +2.5 Point Spread) Friday, August 9th, 7 PM EST
The Atlanta Falcons are the favorites to win their NFL preseason week 1 matchup against the Miami Dolphins, and it will all come down to the quarterback play. The Falcons shocked the world by selecting Michael Penix Jr. eighth overall in the 2024 NFL draft, and they undoubtedly will be playing their flashy backup quarterback in the preseason. Penix Jr. is bursting with potential, and a potent Falcons offense will be able to tear apart the Dolphins backup defensive players. While Penix Jr. will unlikely see any regular season snaps with Kirk Cousins entering the season as QB1, he will want to leave a good impression on his coaching staff and the league as a whole in the opening preseason matchup. The Dolphins are unlikely to put injury-prone quarterback Tua Tagovailoa under the center of this meaningless matchup, leaving Mike White and Skylar Thompson under the gun. White has solid NFL experience, but the lack of a deep ball threat will allow the Falcons defenders to play tighter coverage. The quarterback advantage for the Falcons makes this -158 line very playable, and they are a great NFL preseason week 1 prediction to make.
Prediction: Atlanta Falcons to win the game (-158)

Cincinnati Bengals (-213, -4 Point Spread) vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+150, +4 Point Spread) Saturday, August 10th, 7 PM EST
It is out of the ordinary to see a player like Joe Burrow suit up in NFL preseason Week 1 action, but after getting injured last season, the Bengals will want him to get back in his rhythm as soon as possible. Burrow is one of the best quarterbacks in the league, and even if he only plays half the game, he will be able to shred apart the Buccaneers defense. Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield is a seasoned NFL veteran who will not be taking preseason snaps, especially in the first week. The Buccaneers have a very shallow quarterback room, so unless Mayfield makes a surprise appearance, they will struggle to move the ball down the field. When making your NFL week 1 preseason predictions, the quarterback position is the most important one to keep an eye on. The difference between Burrow for the Bengals and Kyle Trask or John Wolford for the Buccaneers cannot be overemphasized, and the Bengals will have no problem building a sizable first-half lead.
Prediction: Cincinnati Bengals to win the game (-213)
New England Patriots (-225, -4 Point Spread) vs Carolina Panthers (+157, +4 Point Spread) Thursday August 8th, 7 PM EST
The New England Patriots will have a difficult decision as to who to play at quarterback this season. Jacoby Brissett is an NFL veteran who has proven to be one of the best backup quarterbacks in the league. His starting roles have been few and far between, but he has consistently delivered solid quarterback play when he is called upon. Joining him in the Patriots quarterback room is the third pick, Drake Maye. Maye is still only 21 years old and will need time to develop before he starts in the regular season. Regardless of which signal caller suits up, the New England Patriots to cover the spread is a fantastic NFL preseason Week 1 prediction to make. The Panthers already know that Bryce Young will be their starter, and the up-and-coming prospect will not risk injury in the preseason. If it is Maye, or if it is Brissett that plays either way, the Patriots will get the win, and cover the spread for this NFL week 1 preseason pick.
Prediction: New England Patriots cover the spread (-4, -118 odds)
