First Half Breakdown

The first half of Super Bowl LIX was an absolute bloodbath. The game opened up with a pair of punts after neither team made much progress on their opening drives. The Eagles got the ball back and opened up the scoring with a Tush Push courtesy of Jalen Hurts. There was a questionable penalty call in favor of Philadelphia in the buildup, but the Eagles found a way to get into the end zone. After a quick punt, the Chiefs got some momentum back with a big interception at their own five-yard line. That marked the final positive development for the Chiefs in the first half as the Eagles prepared to unravel the game.

A field goal followed by a pick-six thrown by Patrick Mahomes stretched the Eagles’ lead to 17 points with 8 minutes to go in the first half. Cooper DeJean made a crucial interception as the Eagles defense relentlessly pursued Patrick Mahomes in the pocket. Philadelphia certainly had the momentum, but there was still lots of optimism that the Chiefs could overturn a 17 point first half deficit. However, a second Patrick Mahomes interception gave the Eagles the ball at the Kansas City 14-yard line with less than two minutes to go in the first half. Zack Baun successfully intercepted the ball, and the Eagles promptly punched it in to increase their lead to 24-0. The Chiefs were unable to reply before the break and went into halftime in a 24-0 hole.

Second Half Developments

The Kansas City Chiefs were facing a massive deficit in the Super Bowl, but their privilege to receive the ball in the second half, combined with an incredible season from Patrick Mahomes, meant there was still plenty of optimism on the sideline. Kansas City hadn’t had to play from behind often this season, but Mahomes and Travis Kelce’s connection made a comeback inevitable. Kansas City was forced to punt the ball immediately to start the second half after the Chiefs offensive line was unable to contain a potent Eagles pass rush. Philadelphia turned that into a field goal, giving them a 27-0 lead. What the Eagles did so well on this specific drive was deflate the aspirations of the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs were facing a 27-0 deficit, and 9:42 was drained off the clock during the opening two drives. The Chiefs were running out of time for a comeback, and no one could have predicted what would happen next.

The Chiefs were forced to go for it on fourth down at midfield after looking up at a 0-27 scoreboard and turned the ball over on downs late in the third quarter. The Eagles now had the football at the 46-yard line, and the entire world expected Saquon Barkley to get a heavy dosage of the ball for the rest of the game. However, head coach Nick Sirianni and offensive coordinator Kellen Moore had other plans. Jalen Hurts uncorked a deep bomb to DeVonta Smith to score a 46-yard touchdown. Despite the unexpected nature of the gutsy play call to take a shot down the field, it proved to be the decisive moment against the Chiefs. A Jake Elliott extra point stretched the lead to 34-0, and the celebrations began on the Philadelphia sideline. The fourth quarter was eventful for both teams, but the Eagles’ huge lead made it irrelevant. The Chiefs finally found the end zone to cut the lead to 34-6, but a pair of field goals from the Eagles made it 40-6. Kansas City receiver Xavier Worthy scored two late touchdowns to make it 40-22, but the Chiefs never really had a chance to make a comeback.

Key Performances

There were several key performances, both good and bad, at Super Bowl LIX 2025. The Super Bowl MVP was given to Jalen Hurts, and it is hard to make an argument for anyone else, given how the game played out. Hurts completed 77.3% of his passes for 221 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. His interception was the only real misplaced throw in the game, as his ability to bring poise to the Eagles’ offense was a major factor in their victory. On the ground, he scurried for 72 rushing yards, a Super Bowl quarterback record. Time and time again, Hurts picked up first downs with his legs, defaulting to the Chiefs’ sideline. His early touchdown via Tush Push gave the Eagles the lead and a platform to build on for the rest of the game.

The Eagles also showcased several crucial defensive performances. Josh Sweat and Milton Williams combined for 4.5 sacks against Patrick Mahomes, with Williams securing a strip sack to secure the victory in the fourth quarter. Cooper DeJean made headlines with his pick-six, while Zack Baun had a team-high seven combined tackles with a crucial interception to set up an Eagles touchdown. Shutting out the Kansas City Chiefs for nearly three quarters is no small feat, and the Eagles defense as a whole won them this game.

Turning Points

Several key turning points allowed the Eagles to secure the win. Pressuring Patrick Mahomes in the first quarter set the tone for the rest of the game, and it was hard to envision the Chiefs finding any success on offense. Crucial drops from Travis Kelce and DeAndre Hopkins forced the Chiefs to punt on multiple occasions. The first nine Kansas City drives were 6 punts, a turnover on downs, and a pair of interceptions, all for no points. The pick-six from Dejean to stretch the lead to 17-0 was certainly a big turning point, but there was still lots of belief that the Chiefs could make a comeback. The real nail in the coffin was the 46-yard, one play touchdown drive to make it 34-0, solidifying the Eagles victory and Jalen Hurts’ MVP status.

Post-Game Reactions

Even the biggest Philadelphia fans could not have seen this one coming. The entire nation was in shock after the 2025 Super Bowl, not only because the Eagles won but also because of the nature of their victory. Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift were forced to get out of the spotlight after dominating NFL headlines for the last three years. Hurts said he ‘used his doubters as motivation’ to win the Super Bowl LIX in 2025, while Saquon Barkley was all smiles in his postgame interviews. Barkley stated he ‘couldn’t stand the Eagles six months ago’ but now couldn’t be happier to win with the franchise. Finally, Patrick Mahomes broke the silence after his worst career game. He wholeheartedly took the blame but vowed that they ‘will be back’ next season with one goal in mind.

This was certainly not the most competitive Super Bowl, but it will go down as one of the most eventful. The Eagles join the Patriots and Chiefs as the only three teams with multiple Super Bowl championships in the last 17 years, and the city will be celebrating all week as they get ready for the Friday championship parade in Philadelphia.
