Expert Prediction: Who Wins?

Cleveland Browns vs Philadelphia Eagles Predictions

The advent of joint practices in August has created genuinely exciting preseason contests, with two teams tired of relatively unphysical practices against an opponent finally getting to do battle in game action.

That’s the case in Philadelphia this week, where the Browns and Eagles will collide after spending the week sharpening up against one another. Furthering the intrigue at play on Saturday is the signal callers involved, with both teams boasting quarterbacks worth plenty of attention ahead of the regular season.

A week after the Eagles were dragged into a preseason shootout with Cincinnati, another potential high-scoring, back-and-forth game looms against another AFC North, Ohio-based opponent. An exciting Saturday afternoon clash with plenty to unpack.

Why the Cleveland Browns Can Cover

Things couldn’t have started much better for the Browns last week, with a hugely encouraging preseason win over the Panthers. Much more important than the 30-10 scoreline was the play of rookie fifth round pick Shedeur Sanders.

The much maligned quarterback got the majority of reps under center, and did brilliantly with them. Sanders threw for 138 yards and two touchdowns on 14 of 23 passing, operating efficiently and, crucially, turnover free. The performance was one to build on, and looked to be the start of Sanders’ claim to the starting gig in Week 1.

But unfortunately, Cleveland’s cursed existence simply continues. Sanders suffered an oblique strain in practice this week and is unlikely to play on Saturday as a result. That means the Browns will turn the keys over to another rookie quarterback, Dillon Gabriel, who was actually taken ahead of Sanders in this past April’s draft.

Though Gabriel is listed as the third quarterback on the Browns’ Week 2 preseason depth chart (behind Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett), he’ll likely get the most reps in order for the team to get an extended look at their other rookie.

A six-year starter in college, Gabriel accumulated gaudy numbers between the University of Central Florida, Oklahoma, and Oregon, throwing for 155 touchdowns and over 18,000 yards in 64 games. Gabriel’s college ball experience will lend itself to preseason, where the level of competition is limited, but major questions exist around his ability to play in meaningful NFL games, which is what the Browns will be trying to find out.

A young team in transition, last week showed why Cleveland can cover here. It has a deep group of quarterbacks and a roster largely unproven and eager to show out while the reps are there. If Gabriel can replicate Sanders’ impressive showing from a week ago, the Browns should hang around in Philly.

Why the Philadelphia Eagles Can Cover

While the Browns are hoping Dillon Gabriel—or one of their litany of quarterbacks—can create some magic on Saturday, the Eagles don’t need to do so much wish casting. Every couple years, a backup quarterback emerges as a preseason superstar, and in second-year passer Tanner McKee, the Eagles have just that.

McKee first made waves at the end of last regular season, when he went 27 of 41 for 269 yards and two touchdowns while not turning the ball over against an eliminated Giants squad. He followed it up with a star showing last week, throwing for 252 yards and two touchdowns on 20 of 25 passing against the Bengals.

From last preseason, to Week 18, and then to last week’s performance, McKee has impressed at every turn. It’s getting to the point where he’ll draw trade interest from quarterback needy teams and have the chance to compete for a starting job—something that won’t be afforded of him in Philadelphia behind entrenched starter Jalen Hurts.

Until then, McKee will continue to be a star in his role—and in the preseason. Against a Browns defense that let Andy Dalton operate efficiently last week, expect McKee to stack yet another good game on his already impressive sample. And, as a result, expect the Eagles to deliver a preseason win in front of their rabid fans.
