Jacksonville Jaguars vs Miami Dolphins Predictions

An all-Florida battle will help to close out this year’s preseason, as the Jacksonville Jaguars head south to face the Miami Dolphins on Saturday. Ahead of the action, Sportzino’s free sportsbook has you covered with all the NFL odds and Jaguars vs. Dolphins prediction you need.

The Jags are yet to enjoy a win this August, with an early loss to the Steelers followed up by a tie against the Saints, in which sophomore passer Spencer Rattler led his team late to force Jacksonville into overtime, where the deadlock remained as such.

The Dolphins, meanwhile, overcame a humbling week of joint practices with the Lions to win in Detroit after, oddly, a tie in Week 1 of the preseason. Now, all eyes are turned to the looming regular season, with a little interstate bragging rights on the line first.

Expert Prediction: Who Wins?

Over the last several seasons, as joint practices have become increasingly commonplace thanks to the Rams and Sean McVay, they’ve begun to serve as a tense runway toward a genuinely exciting conclusion.

Football is, by nature, a physical and tense sport, and even in joint practices, emotions tend to run high. Fights break out, it gets personal, and then at the end of the week, they can finally hit one another in real, albeit preseason, football action.

For the third successive week, the Miami Dolphins have endured testing weeks in joint practices, and for the third successive week, it’s led toward a preseason battle—this time with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Despite these joint practices between the teams, which are now an annual function, there isn’t a friendliness to the affair. It’ll be physical, competitive football.

As the preseason comes to a close, there’s reason for intrigue on both sides. It sets up a great end to the preseason in South Florida.

Why the Jacksonville Jaguars Can Cover

The Jacksonville Jaguars may have yet to taste victory during their preseason slate, but perhaps the single most important result has hit: Trevor Lawrence has performed well and looked comfortable in his latest, new offense.

In limited action, the former first overall pick has gone a combined 14 for 17 with 119 yards passing and one touchdown to no picks across two preseason games. Though it’s largely been backup Nick Mullens’ show throughout the slate, new head coach Liam Cohen and company have to be encouraged by the efficiency with which Lawrence has played.

That comfort has extended across the offense, where the Jags’ crowded, three-man backfield has all shown a little bit of juice. With a tertiary receiving threat like tight end Brenton Strange also flashing in his few targets, Jacksonville’s offense appears to be ramping up ahead of Week 1 of the regular season.

The Jags’ defense, however, has caved on multiple occasions.

First, there was a 31-point effort against a Steelers offense largely manned by Skylar Thompson, who completely shredded them. Then there was a second half collapse at the hands of Spencer Rattler, who is battling in the league’s most uninspiring quarterback battle. All told, the Jags’ defense has left a lot to be desired.

With the regular season fast approaching, that’s their path to covering in Miami. The defense desperately needs to play with the level of intensity required come September. If that unit can get an extended run from next month’s starters and translate it into even a decent performance, the Jags should hang around against the Dolphins’ backups.

Why the Miami Dolphins Can Cover

Despite boasting a pair of quarterbacks behind starter Tua Tagovailoa, who, at one time or another, boasted a high pedigree, the Miami Dolphins have not enjoyed good quarterback play in the preseason.

Former second overall pick Zach Wilson—who somehow still has fringe believers around the league—is the favourite to be a valued backup to oft-injured starter Tagovailoa. Across two games, Wilson has gone a combined 20 for 32, with 247 yards passing, and one touchdown to zero interceptions.

Rookie Quinn Ewers, taken in the sixth round after a famous college career, has struggled even more. The former Longhorn has gone 16 for 35 with 207 yards passing and two scores to no picks.

Despite both Ewers and Wilson’s jump in play from the first to second preseason game, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel has continued to express frustration with his team’s play and intensity. For a team that, in the past several years, has been criticized for folding in hard moments, it’s jarring.

Regardless of how much—if it all—Miami’s starters play on Saturday, we can expect a couple of things. Wilson and Ewers should continue to improve, as they have over the first two preseason games—especially as they’ll now face the least talented defense of the slate.

And, more crucially for its chances of covering, we’ll see a higher level of intensity from the Dolphins team as a whole.
