There’s a lot to unpack, but the most exciting NFL prediction to analyze on Saturday is the play of J.J. McCarthy. The Vikings’ second year passer now has the keys to the offense, following Sam Darnold’s departure, and it’ll be fascinating to see how he performs after a lost rookie season.
For the Texans’ part, they’re simply looking to rebound from a season that saw regression across the board — despite another AFC South title and a playoff win.

Expert Prediction: Who Wins?

There is a fascinating contrast at play in Minnesota, as the Houston Texans open their preseason slate against the Vikings. The Texans, in CJ Stroud, know exactly what they have — a bona fide franchise quarterback with an MVP-caliber ceiling. They are, however, starting anew after former offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik was fired following a wildly underwhelming 2024 season.
Despite Stroud’s clear status as a top level passer, Houston is in the midst of a new offense. How much it plays starters, such as Stroud, as a result of a new offense remains to be seen.
On the flip side, the Vikings are one of the most well established offenses in the NFL thanks to head coach Kevin O’Connell’s long-standing status. Yet, they too have a sense of newness. After a meniscus injury wiped out JJ McCarthy’s rookie season, reps will be of the utmost importance for a Minnesota team looking to continue to compete.
Though O’Connell hasn’t tipped his hand in terms of the play time expected for the starters, it’s safe to assume McCarthy will get a relatively extended run — setting up an excellent meeting.

Why the Houston Texans Can Cove
Almost regardless of how much — or how little — the Texans’ starters play on Saturday, their route to covering remains unchanged. That’s because it’s more about exploiting a Vikings team trying to work out kinks and begin to click as a unit. With Houston’s highly opportunistic secondary, relentless pass rush, and well-coached cohesion, it’s a great spot for its defense to really shine.
Ahead of the 2025 regular season, the Texans are expected to be among the league’s finest defenses. Though the stars like Will Anderson Jr., Danielle Hunter, Jalen Pitre, Derek Stingley Jr., and C.J. Gardner-Johnson will likely only see a handful of series, expect a tone to be set and that level of performance to carry.
If Houston’s defense can be its typically opportunistic self, it can damage a Vikings offense finding its footing.
Why the Minnesota Vikings Can Cover
While the Vikings and JJ McCarthy’s new partnership provides the Texans a great opportunity, it’s also a strong signal to consider Minnesota in this spot. In preseason play, when quarterback performance is paramount to everything, the knowledge that one passer will get an extended run is encouraging.
Barring a disastrous performance from the Vikes’ offensive line, it’s a near guarantee that McCarthy will play several more series than CJ Stroud does for the Texans. That, in itself, is a considerable edge for the Vikings to hold. When looking further down the respective teams’ depth charts, that edge becomes even more crystallized.
In Sam Howell, Minnesota has a quality backup quarterback and the exact kind of dual threat who can provide a whole lot of August thrills. Howell is a veteran of 18 NFL starts and, though he turns the ball over frequently and takes far too many sacks, he has the experience, talent, and running ability to punish preseason defenses.
When we last saw Howell as a starter, in his lone season as the Commanders’ signal-caller, he was good for a couple of chunk runs per game. Combined with a live arm, he should be expected to flash against the depths of the Texans’ defense.
Though Houston has an even more experienced hand to turn to behind Stroud, in Davis Mills, the recipe for preseason success isn’t quite the same. Mills has flashed competent quarterback play across 26 starts, but he isn’t one to thrive in chaos like Howell.
Rather, Mills is a statuesque quarterback who needs an offense to be in rhythm and on time to succeed. In preseason play, where rotation is constant and so many players are thrown into action with little to no reps with their quarterback, rhythm will be hard to come by.
Between an extended stretch of play for McCarthy, compared to Stroud, and a more lively backup in Howell verse Mills, the Vikings are the more appealing option to cover on Saturday at U.S. Bank Stadium.
