Venezuela took down the United States in dramatic fashion to claim the first World Baseball Classic in the nation’s history.
The 3-2 scoreline kept the game tense until the final strike, but Venezuela was able to claim gold at a time when their country needed a win. It was an instant classic to wrap up an incredibly successful tournament, as the 20-team championship drew the most viewers it has ever had.
Strong Pitching and Timely Hitting Put Venezuela in Control
Eduardo Rodriguez got the start for Venezuela, hurling 4.1 innings while allowing just one hit and one walk without conceding a run. Maikel Garcia gave the South American side the lead with a sacrifice fly in the third inning, before Wilyer Abreu doubled the advantage with a solo home run in the fifth inning. Venezuela looked to be in complete control until the eighth, when the USA found a lifeline.
Harper’s Heroics Briefly Revive the USA Before a Ninth-Inning Answer
Bobby Witt Jr. got on base with a two-out walk in the bottom of the eighth inning, bringing Bryce Harper up to the plate. Just as he has so many times before, Harper made something out of nothing with a two-out, two-run home run to level the contest.
It was only the third hit of the game for the USA, and the second of the night for Harper, but they found a way to tie the game when it mattered most. However, the celebrations were cut short when Eugenio Suarez smacked an RBI double to left center field in the top of the ninth inning, giving Venezuela another late lead. The South American side didn’t allow another base runner and held on for their first World Baseball Classic.
What the Defeat Reveals About Team USA’s Future
The United States looked far less dominant this year than in the tournament’s past. They lost to Italy in the group stage, edged past Canada and the Dominican Republic by two and one run in the knockout stage before falling to Venezuela in the final. Their bats were unable to consistently deliver all tournament long, including in the final, where they mustered just three hits in nine innings of play.
It is crucial to note that Tigers’ ace Tarik Skubal went home early to get ready for the season, but there is still more than enough talent on the American roster elsewhere. They had All-Stars up and down their batting order, a stacked bullpen, and no shortage of reserves to call on. The other countries are starting to catch up, with the Dominican Republic, Japan, and Venezuela all among the best teams in the world, but Team USA will still feel as though it is a step above the rest.
The next World Baseball Classic will not take place until 2029, giving the USA and the other contenders lots of time to fine-tune their rosters. Most of the American side will be entering their prime at that time, giving them a real shot at avenging this defeat. There is still plenty of baseball to be played in the near future, as most of the Venezuelan winners will be heading to their respective spring training camps with the MLB season one week away.
